Household focus of the design

Understanding Society collects information on all members of sampled households. This is important for research on, for example:

  • consumption and income, where within-household sharing of resources is important
  • demographic change, where the household itself is often the object of study
  • decision making within the family
  • comparative analysis of sibling outcomes     

In addition, the household focus provides opportunities to:

  • explore linkages outside the household
  • examine long-term transmission processes from one generation to the next
